Nursing Excellence Fund

The Nursing Excellence Fund was created under the authority of §61-3-1 1978 NMSA Nursing Practice Act with operational guidelines created by the Board of Nursing (BON) through its Nursing Excellence Fund Policy.  The information on this page is a limited overview. Applicants and Grantees should review the Nursing Excellence Fund Policy for comprehensive information about the fund including detailed requirements for applications and reports.

Objectives

Each applicant is required to demonstrate how its proposal meets one or more of the following objectives:

  1. Strategies to enhance recruitment and retention of professional nurses;
  2. Strategies to increase career and educational opportunities;
  3. Strategies to improve nursing interaction with health facilities administrations;
  4. Strategies to improve nursing interaction with the medical profession;
  5. Strategies to improve nursing interaction with the institutions of higher

The BON grants these funds at its discretion and may prioritize particular issues that need to be addressed for New Mexico nurses.

Planning and Deadlines

  • The BON shall receive grant applications throughout the fiscal year. A minimum of 80% of nursing excellence program funding shall be awarded at the last board meeting of each fiscal year to applicants who submitted a grant application which complies with the Policy. If the applications for funding are not sufficient, the board may fund less than the required minimum of 80% of the fund balance. The remaining funds can be awarded anytime within the fiscal year.
  • Grant applications must be presented to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Applications are due no fewer than 30 days before the next board meeting.
  • A representative of the requesting organization is required to be present at the board meeting to present the application and answer any questions. Presentations will be limited to five minutes.
  • All awarded grants are fiscal year grants that must be completed by the end of the current fiscal year, July 1 to June 30.
  • Recipients are required to submit a written report to be presented by a Grantee representative at the last regularly scheduled board meeting of the fiscal year for which the grant is awarded.
