DEA Scam alert
New Mexico Board of Nursing has received notifications about ongoing scams targeting people with nursing licenses or state issued certificates. The nurse receives a call from an individual claiming to be from the nursing board, DEA, or FBI about suspected illegal drug activity, illegal prescribing, or illegal banking activity by the individual. The callers instruct the individual to cooperate with their investigation by making a payment or providing/verifying detailed personal information.
BON personnel will never contact licensees/certificate holders to demand money or any other form of payment, will never request personal or sensitive information, and will only notify people of a legitimate investigation or legal action by email through the nurse portal or by official letter.
Nurses and certificate holders can protect themselves by following these tips:
- Never trust an unknown caller. Licensed professionals name and license number can be found on a public website.
- Call the agency directly. If you receive a call claiming to be from a government agency or private company, do NOT provide personal information and tell them you will call the agency directly.
- Never give out financial information to an unknown caller. Hang up and call the agency identified.
If you receive a call from a person claiming to be with BON, DEA or FBI, asking for money, should report the incident to the FBI at www.ic3.gov. The Federal Trade Commission provides recovery steps, shares information with more than 3,000 law enforcement agencies and takes reports at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
For any victims who have given personally identifiable information like a social security number to the caller, can learn how to protect against identity theft at www.identitytheft.gov.
