CHT-NC

Initial Application Process

1. High school graduate or successful completion of general education development (GED) course.
   1. Community college or university transcript is also acceptable.
   2. If applicant possesses an international diploma, it must be submitted into English by a board approved vendor. Please email licensing@bon.nm.gov or call 505-841-8340 for more information.
2. The applicant must hold a valid national hemodialysis technician certificate from a nationally recognized organization. If the applicant passes the national hemodialysis technician examination, the applicant cannot work as a CHT until the certificate has been issued by the board.
3. Attestation on letterhead from the board approved agency nurse educator that the applicant has been oriented to the scope of function of the certified hemodialysis technician.
4. Submit the CHT-NC application to the agency with required fees.

Renewal Process

1. CHT-NC must provide evidence of 20 contact hours of continuing education, four of which must be specific to initiating and discontinuing central venous catheters.
   1. Must be accrued within 24 months immediately preceding renewal. CE may be prorated to commensurate with the length of the renewal period.
   2. Recertification by a national CHT certifying body will meet the mandatory CE requirements for New Mexico certification renewal. Continuing education obtained for national certification is applicable if completed during the board certification renewal period.
2. Applicant must provide evidence from the approved program Nurse Educator, on company letterhead, of a minimum of 1,000 hours work as a CHT NC during the 24-month period immediately preceding certification renewal.
3. Complete the CHT-NC Renewal application by the deadline and remit the required fee.

Endorsement

1. If an applicant holds hemodialysis certification from another jurisdiction in the United States, the application must:
   1. Hold a high school diploma or have proof of successfully passing a general education development test.
   2. The applicant for certified hemodialysis technician will demonstrate completion of adequate training by submitting proof of a valid national hemodialysis technician certificate from a nationally recognized organization.
2. Submit verification from another jurisdiction directly to the board that certificate is in good standing.
   1. If the applicant is unable to provide verification, then the applicant must follow the process for initial certification.
3. Submit the CHT-NC Endorsement application and fee.

CHT I Renewal

Only for a Hemodialysis Tech I who was certified prior to 1/1/2024 that do not have a national certification and need to renew. If your certification has lapsed for more than 12 months you must provide proof of a national certification to continue to work as a CHT.

Applicant must meet the prerequisites:

1. Provide evidence of 16 contact hours of continuing education. Must be accrued within the 24-months immediately preceding renewal. CE may be prorated to commensurate with the length of the renewal period.
2. Applicant must provide evidence from the approved CHT program Nurse Educator, on company letterhead, of a minimum of 1,000 hours work as a CHT I during the 24-month period immediately preceding certification renewal.
3. Complete the CHT I Renewal application by the deadline and remit the required fee.

CHT II Renewal

Only for a Hemodialysis Tech II who was certified prior to 1/1/2024 that do not have a national certification and need to renew. If your certification has lapsed for more than 12 months you must provide proof of a national certification to continue to work as a CHT.

Applicant must meet the prerequisites:

1. Provide evidence of 20 contact hours of continuing education, four of which must be specific to initiating and discontinuing central venous catheters. Must be accrued within 24 months immediately preceding renewal. CE may be prorated to commensurate with the length of the renewal period.
2. Applicant must provide evidence from the approved CHT program Nurse Educator, on company letterhead, of a minimum of 1,000 hours work as a CHT II during the 24-month period immediately preceding certification renewal.
3. Complete the CHT II Renewal application by the deadline and remit the required fee.

Reinstatement of CHT Certifications Lapsed for Less Than 12 Months

If the CHT-NC, CHT I, or CHT II certificate has been inactive for less than one year, the applicant may reactivate the license by submitting a reinstatement application for Reinstatement, paying the required fee, and submitting proof of required continuing education contact hours for a 24-month certificate period and required work hours.

Applicant must meet the prerequisites:

• Complete the CHT I Reinstatement Application.
• Fee: Once application is complete pay the application fee.
• Continuing Education:
  • Upload 16 contact hours of continuing education into CE Broker
  • CEs must have been completed in the last 24 months OR complete a Refresher Course with a Board Approved Facility (Refresher Course will cover work hours and CEs)
• Verification of Work Hours:
  • Upload minimum of 1000 work hours into CE Broker
  • Work hours need to be documented and verified by an approved CHT program Nurse Educator, on company letterhead
  • Work hours must have been completed in the last 24 months.

Reinstatement of CHT Certifications Lapsed for More Than 12 Months

If the CHT-NC, CHT I, or CHT II certificate is allowed to lapse and remain inactive for more than one year past the expiration date, the certificate holder must meet the requirements for the initial CHT-NC certificate, including obtaining a valid national hemodialysis technician certificate from a recognized organization.
